Myra Oppel is the principal of the Oppel Group, LLC. She grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi, and began a career in journalism by working at the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo and The Sun Herald in Biloxi as a reporter, copy editor, and then an editor. She joined The Associated Press in Jackson, Mississippi, and then transferred to the Hartford, Connecticut, bureau. After a dozen years in journalism, she shifted to Northeast Utilities, where she was responsible for media relations for New England’s largest electric utility (then 1.7 million customers), including local, regional, trade, and national print and broadcast media.

Since leaving Northeast Utilities in 1997, Ms. Oppel has worked as a consultant — writing, technical editing, publication development and coordination, and public relations — for myriad clients, including political candidates, governmental agencies, nonprofit groups, corporations, and publications.

Her unique skills include strategic communications, integrated marketing, writing, editing, design, media relations and media training, and intranet and Internet website development. She has been accredited as a public relations professional by the Public Relations Society of America.

Ms. Oppel graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism.

She lives with her husband and their three children in suburban Washington, D.C. Bob Schuster has the honor of being the “co-godfather” for Mr. and Mrs. Oppel’s youngest child, Sam.
